endoCube: A green Solution for business

As companies around the world are urged to cut energy consumption and curb CO2 emissions, green is increasingly the future of business.

Refrigeration is one of the 3 main drivers of energy consumption for many businesses. It is estimated that 20% of the world’s global energy is used by refrigeration.  In addition to air conditioning, the biggest challenge is to address electricity levels from refrigeration in industries such as: grocery and convenience stores, restaurants, pubs and hotels.  For each of these types of businesses, refrigeration is a major expense and a driver of summer peak load.

When you consider more than half of the electricity in a grocery store is used to run fridges and freezers, you can imagine the impact these devices will have.  The largest energy saving will be realized in the large freezers and the open chill cabinets used in the catering and supermarket industries.  Additional savings will accrue based on the extended lifespan of refrigeration equipment as well as fewer break downs and service calls.

Today, the endoCube is being installed in refrigeration equipment across multiple industries in the UK and Ireland, Europe and beyond by clients realising they can make a difference.

With 1000's now fitted it is estimated that refrigeration units use approximately 1200kWh less electricity and save more than half a tonne of CO2 per endoCube per year.  As mentioned above the largest savings are made on larger units.

endocubeSo What is the endoCube?

The endoCube is a onetime retrofit, non mechanical or electrical device consisting of a non-toxic wax food simulant contained in a double skinned enclosure.  The food simulant mimics food temperature at around 10mm below the surface and is designed to fit quickly and easily around the refrigeration units return air temperature sensor.  With the cube fitted, the refrigeration unit now responds only to the temperature of the wax core, and prevents fluctuating air temperatures from spontaneously starting the unit.  This means that compressor cycles are less frequent following influxes of warm air every time the unit is open and closed, therefore conserving electricity.

Designed and manufactured in the UK and patented globally the endoCube has been rolled out in the UK, US and Europe with great success.  Greene King, one of the largest pub owners in the UK is installing ‘endoCubes’ and it is estimated will save approximately £3.5 million pounds a year in electricity costs, averaging 20% savings for each refrigeration unit that the endoCube is installed in.

Benefits of the endoCube

The endoCube is being installed, with superb results, in leading supermarkets such as Carrefour, breweries such as Guiness and hotels such as Hilton who are benefitting from a return on investment period of between 9 to 12 months according to studies in the UK and Europe, as well as other benefits which include:

  • Considerable reduction in electricity usage
  • Large reduction in CO2 emissions
  • Noise reduction
  • Increased life expectancy of equipment due to less wear and tear
  • Reduction in breakdowns
  • Reduced sensor failures as the sensors are protected by the endoCube
  • Food monitoring leads to safer food and less product spoilage

Where can endoCube’s be fitted?

Currently not all forms of refrigeration are compatible with the endoCube but below outlines the types of equipment in which the cube can and cannot be fitted:

The endoCube can be fitted to:
· Upright fridges and freezers
· Walk in fridges and freezers
· Dairy decks
· Deli bars
· Salad wells

The endoCube cannot be fitted to:
· Domestic fridges and freezers
· Blast chillers
· Chest fridges and freezers
· Ice making equipment

Testimonials

Do not take our word for it that this product is a revolution take the word of those who have tried it

‘.....We have carried out an independent trial with an endoCube in one of our on-site kitchens, through the trial we made an energy saving of 17.78%. Based on these savings we will be rolling out the endoCube npower busness logoacross all of our sites. It is a simple idea that seems to be very effective in energy saving which will lead to a reduction in CO2 emissions’.
Mike Wells, Head of Facilities,

‘.....When we first heard about the endoCube, we wanted to test it as quickly as possible. We arranged for a large scale trial to be completed and once the results were in, we immediately implemented the eCube at the Riverbank Park Plaza. As a result of installing over 150 endoCubes, we are saving appx £17,000 per year on our electricity bill. Since the successful trial at Riverbank the eCube is now being installed throughout the Park Plaza Hotels in the UK’.
David Bell, Chief Engineer, Riverbank Park Plaza Hotel

‘.....When we saw the advert for the eCube we were just beginning our environmental project. Trials were set up and showed the savings made it an invaluable product to use. We have asked all our 150 kitchens to have them fitted and our client response has been extremely positive. Everyone from endoCube have been extremely helpful, I have no hesitation to recommend them to others’.
Caroline Fry, Joint Managing Director, Charlton House Catering Services Ltd

endoTherm

A new device called the ‘endoTherm’ can establish the temperature of the produce within a refrigerated unit.  This new device is a thermometer based on the same concept as the endoCube, with the wax food simulant at the base of the thermometer causing it to behave in a similar manner as the endoCube, thus providing a more accurate reading of the temperature of the produce within the refrigeration unit.

With the thermostat now recording the core temperature of the produce, clients will be able to better gauge the operational function of their equipment.  Simply leave the thermometer in the coldest location of a unit for 2 hours and adjust the thermostat accordingly.  Read the temperature first thing in the morning and a progressive rise in temperature over several days will indicate a refrigeration failure, which could be repaired more swiftly and therefore reduce spoilage and waste.

This low cost device can work in tandem with the endoCube to provide further savings as well as enable differing industries to monitor produce and product temperatures within their refrigeration equipment more accurately.
